What does prorated mean?

Prorated means an amount is calculated in proportion to the part of a full period or quantity being counted.

Use matching units

Prorated amount = full amount × selected units ÷ total units

Ten calendar days, ten workdays and ten months describe different shares. Establish what the payment terms allow, then use the same unit for the selected and full periods.

Choose the right calculation

For actual calendar dates, use the general prorate calculator. It counts weekends and leap days, so it does not reproduce a workday-based payroll example.

For a partial rental month, use the prorated rent calculator. It compares actual-month, 365-day and capped 30-day methods. The rent meaning guide explains why the move date and day-count convention matter.

Prorated does not always mean discounted

A proportional charge uses the same price per chosen unit for fewer units. A discount changes the price. Similarly, the unused share of an amount is a calculation; whether it is refundable is a separate question.

Questions, answered

What are prorated charges?

They are charges allocated to a share of a full period or quantity. A bill covering only 10 of 30 equally priced days would charge one-third of the full-period amount, if those are the applicable terms.

What is a prorated fee?

It is a proportional part of a fee. The agreement must identify the complete fee and how its shares are counted—for example, by days or months. A fixed setup fee may follow different terms.

What is a prorated refund?

It is a proportional amount returned for an unused share, when a refund is available. Calculating unused time does not by itself establish a right to a refund; check the cancellation policy and applicable rules.

What does prorated pay mean?

It means allocating pay to part of a specified work period. The workday example above assumes equal daily shares of gross pay. It does not establish a payroll method, permissible salary deduction or take-home amount.
